Nothing better than to take the direct Air India Flight to Delhi from Frankfurt... to arrive fresh in the morning.

First things first – move your clocks (wrist watches) +4.5 hours if arriving from Germany in winter time (until 30 March) or +3.5 hours between 30 March and 26 October 2014.

Make sure you have your passport and Immigration form handy or kept ready in your purse / bag.

As you disembark from the plane, there will only be one exit door through the arm (walkway) leading you to the inside of the Arrival Hall (higher level of the Airport).

Now follow the direction signage to Arrivals (& Transfers) – all displayed on boards you will see overhead. Moving floor belt / flat elevators take you closer to the point where you can take the escalator steps going down 1 level, directly to the Immigration (Passport Control or PassKontrolle) counters.

As you are on the escalator, you will see the most beautiful part of the Airport – so keep your Cameras ready to shoot a few nice shots (photography is not permitted near Immigration control on the ground floor) and the best shots are taken from atop or as you come down the elevator.

Immigration

There are plenty of Immigration Counters – some marked for “Foreigners”. But you can join the queue anywhere – selecting the shortest of course. Here you will present your passport and the Immigration Form you would have filled in the flight. If the Officer asks, just state simply the reason for visit (to visit India). If they ask, where you will be staying – you can say “hotels”. If they ask how much money you are carrying, you can say “we have bank ATM card”.

They will stamp your passport with the arrival stamp and give you the bottom counterfoil of the form. You can safely keep your passport away and keep the small counterfoil (slip) handy.

From there you will pass through the Duty Free Shops to an open hall, with many baggage belts - a digital display will show your arriving flight number and the belt. Free Trolleys are available to use. Once you collect your baggage, you can walk out through a central walkway (overhead banner says Green Channel ~ nothing to declare).

As you walk out, you will see an X-ray machine to your left (and some Customs Officers in white uniform), but keep walking out straight. If they ask which flight, you can simply say “Frankfurt”. On this exit passage, if you see a brown (Khakhi) uniform Police man/woman, they may be collecting the counter foil you had stamped by the Immigration.

Now as you step out, you will see a main exit door marked “6″ and to the left of that you will see small kiosk like counters. The last but one is a Delhi Traffic Police Taxi counter.

Delhi Police Taxi Counter

At this counter, you have to first say the area name (say “South Extension”) and then say your name. They will ask how many bags, so just declare the checked bags only. Handbags are not to be counted. They will tell you the cost in INdian Rupee (INR). Usually about 375 INR. When you handover the 500 currency note, make sure you get the right change back. Or at least demand the change. They may ask you to wait a while, to get some change (restgeld). You will get a computer printed receipt, which you don’t need to give to the Taxi driver till end of the journey. But you have to tell him where you have to go.

As you step out of the gate 6, you will see an ocean of people. Just keep walking past them and cross the first street to get on to the parallel paved area, where the signage indicate the Taxi Stop number. The number for your taxi Stand is printed on your receipt – remember it is not the taxi kennzeichen.

One advise – most other taxi guys will prompt you to get in to their cab, irrespective of the number, but it is advisable, that you walk up to the number and board the Taxi from there. Please make sure you load all your luggage – keep most of it inside the lockable trunk – definitely keep the hand baggage with you, to avoid any problems.

The Taxi will stop to report at the Police Check point and may ask for the Slip to show to the Policeman noting the name and destination. Once off from there, you will be headed out of the Airport to the city.
